Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve Hiking Tour
Monteverde Wildlife Refuge

Used in the past as an agrarian farm, Refugio de Vida Silvestre Monteverde is a protected area of 30 hectares, situated less than a mile above sea level. Just 1.2 miles from Santa Elena`s downtown, this refuge is right between the Pacific dry forest and Monteverde`s cloud forest, which provides an extensive diversity of flora and fauna. All our trails are properly marked and design for a safe and pleasurable hike. The refuge is an open natural area, which means that a variety of animals visit the area according to the season (feeding or reproductive) or the weather conditions. We have a team of bilingual guides, who are widely experienced in the field, to lead the day tours as well as night tours

Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve Hiking Tour
Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve

The Santa Elena Reserve comprises an area of 310 hectare or 765 acres, and together with the Children's Eternal Rainforest, the Arenal Conservation Area and the Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve constitute a contiguous conservation area of approximately 28,000 hectares or 69,000 acres. Plans are underway to raise funds to buy and restore adjacent farmlands for future inclusion into the Santa Elena Reserve. Conservation efforts in the area are concentrating on establishing forest corridors radiating from the central conservation area down to lower altitudes as many of the forest fauna, such as the Resplendent Quetzal, American Pumas, Jaguars, Ocelots, and Red Brocket Deer require large territories in which to forage and breed.

Children´s Eternal Rainforest
Children´s Eternal Rainforest

The league was created in 1986 by a group of local and international scientists whose aim was to protect the area of forest surrounding the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. In 1987, the MCL embarked on an innovative land acquisition program, in which money that was raised by Swedish schoolchildren went to buy and protect threatened land. Since then, the league has worked with other organizations in more than 40 countries to help form what is now Costa Rica’s largest private reserve, The Children’s Eternal Rainforest (El Bosque Eterno de los Niños). The Children’s Eternal Rainforest straddles the Continental Divide, encompassing 55,600 acres (22,500 ha) of virgin and secondary forest, as well as several reforestation areas

Monteverde Cheese Factory
Monteverde Cheese Factory

The Monteverde Cheese Factory has played an integral role in the development of the Monteverde community since the 1950s, when a group of American Quakers arrived on the scene and began farming dairy cattle. They opened the factory in 1953, using the milk from their own farms to produce about 10 kg of cheese per day. Within two years, their reach had expanded to nearby, non-Quaker farms, whose milk was used to make an increasing amount of cheese. This was an important step in this rural economy, as it helped generate a living for many of the farmers and families living in the central highlands of Costa Rica.
